Dry heat, wet heat, radiation, friction, heated objects, the sun, electricity, or chemicals

Degrees of Burns

1st Degree

mild compared to other burns and affecting of the epidermis (outer layer of the skin)

2nd Degree

(partial thickness burns) affect the epidermis and the dermis (lower layer of skin)

3rd Degree

(full thickness burns) go through the dermis and affect deeper tissues

#4

4th Degree

deepest / most severe burn, life threating, destroys all layers of skin, as well as you bone, mucles, and tendons

Pain Scale

The degree of pain is not related to the severity of the burn, as the most serious burns can be painless.

Burn Treatment

#1

1st Degree Burn

skin care products like aloe vera cream or an antibiotic ointment and pain medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol)

2nd Degree Burn

antibiotic cream or other creams or ointments prescribed by a doctor

Superficial Burn - only part of the dermis is damaged

Deep Partial Burn - more severe, leave scaring or cause permanent change in skin color

3rd Degree Burn

skin grafting or the use of synthetic skin, severe burns covering large parts of the body may need more intensive treatments such as intravenous (IV) antibiotics to prevent infection

#4

4th Degree Burn

Needs immrdiately hospitalization

Skin grafting, synthetic skin, intravenous (IV) antibiotics to prevent infection and regulate body temperature, sometimes amputation
