The Plant Cell

Plant Cell

A cell is the basis of structure and organization in all living organisms. We're comparing the plant cell to a cell phone. Both have many different parts and are complex.

Mitochondria

Mitochondria

Mitochondria turns food into energy for the cell. We're comparing mitochondria to a phone charger. Both make energy for their 'cell'.

The Nucleus

The nucleus is the control center for the cell. It also stores all of the DNA. We're comparing the nucleus to the Settings app. Both store data and control all of the other parts.

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm holds in all of the organelles in place, just like the cell phone display brings all of the apps together.

The Cell Membrane

The Cell Membrane

The cell membrane lets things in and out like a barrier. We're comparing the cell membrane to a firewall. Both act like "gatekeepers" by controlling what goes in and out of the cell.

Cell Wall

Cell Wall

A cell wall provides structure and protects the cell. We're comparing a phone case to the cell wall. Both protect the insides of their "cell" and provide structure.

The Vacuole

Vacuole

The vacuole store nutrients, food, and water. It's like the battery because both store useable energy.

Chloroplast

Chloroplast

Chloroplast is similar to a portable charger because both can turn one type of energy into another. For plants, that means turning solar energy and carbon dioxide into energy for the cell battery. For portable chargers, it means converting chemical energy into cell phone batteries.
