Oxygen-16 is lighter than Oxygen-18 because it has less neutrons.
Since Oxygen-16 is lighter, it can evaporate more easily. On the other hand, Oxygen-18 condenses more easily.
When the temperature rises, there is more Oxygen-18 left in water in comparison with Oxygen-16 which will evaporate more. But when the temperature decreases, Oxygen-16 will still evaporate, but it will evaporate less. This means that there is more Oxygen-16 in comparison with Oxygen-18 than when the temperature is higher.
This can help scientists find out if there is a large change in the temperature of the climate.
Since Oxygen-16 evaporates so quickly and easily, it may be hard to detect and measure the amount of it in comparison to Oxygen-18. It may also be hard to create an instrument to detect something that changes so in amount so quickly.
A PET scan (positron emission tomography scan) can diagnose and show how severe many different types of diseases are in a patient's body. These include cancer, heart diseases and disorders of the brain.
Oxygen-15 is used as a radiotracer for PET scans. The radiotracer is injected in the body and the patient goes in a scanning chamber. Since Oxygen-15 has a half-life of about two minutes and a half, it decays very quickly and emits radiation which is what the PET scan uses to create the image.
The maximum weight the scanning table can support is about 450 pounds. That means that someone who weighs more cannot have a PET scan done. If they do it, the accuracy and quality of the image will be less than the one of someone who weighs less.
