Marcel Newgard was found dead in his home at 1400 hours during a wellness check. He was a 23 year old graduate student from Anytown Community College and work at the Biotic Bistro Restaurant. This check was called in at 1330 hours by a coworker named Naomi Lee who stated Marcel had missed 2 work shifts in a row. She said it was very uncommon for him to miss without saying anything so after confirming with Marcel's sister and roomate, she called the police and asked for a wellness check. The police found Marcel Newgard unresponsive on the floor, and later determined him dead.
Marcel was found dead in his home at 1400 hours on Sunday. However, due to his cell phone locations and other pieces of evidence, his schedule for the last few days was able to be pieced together. Below is a map of Marcel Newgards' neighborhood.
Marcel first left his house at 1012 hours. He went down Maple St and to the interesection of Ash and Maple and arrived at Birpond Park at 1027 hours. At 1202 hours, he went across the street to the Anytown Coffeeshop and then to the gas station on Cherry St at 1219 hours. At 1251 hours, Marcel drove through the intersection of Ash and Cherry to head to the Anytown College where he stayed there until 1615 hours. After his class, he went back up and turned onto Oak st to head to the Anytown gym. He then left the gym at 1758 hours, went to eat at the Anytown BBQ restaurant and headed home at around 1956 hours.
On Friday, Marcel stayed at his house until 1003 hours. He then went to the Anytown coffee shop at 1015 hours and stayed for 1 hour and 15 minutes. He then traveled back home through the intersection of Ash and Maple and arrived at 1135 hours. He stayed at his house until about 1530 hours, where he drove to the Biotic Bistro Restaurant for work. After work, he clocked out at about 2204 hours. He got home at around 2228 hours and hasn't left the house until Sunday at 1430 hours.
Marcel was found laying on the floor in his garage. On Marcel, there are signs of a blow to the head and there was a significant amount of pooling around his forehead. The spatter on the ground tested positive for blood and had multiple small dots around it going outward, so it must have been created from his head hitting the ground. To the left of him, there was a baseball bat with blood smeared on it as well. In addition, there was some red liquid on the car that tested negative for a blood test. The last piece of evidence at the scene was gum under his car which had the DNA of Aidan Santori.
The body is one of the most important evidence because it helped determine the time of death of Marcel. Marcel's cell phone was also one of the most valuable pieces of evidence because it revealed Marcel's locations and schedule in the days leading up to his death and also helped us narrow down a window for the time of death. Several other pieces of evidence that were crucial was the gum under the car, the fingerprints on the baseball bat, and the hair found at the scene. These three pieces of evidence helped narrow the persons of interest down which eventually leaded to Aiden.
While it is crucial to look at all aspects/evidence that could possibly contribute in determining a manner of death, there are some pieces of evidence that are concluded to be unimportant to the case. Some of these include digital evidence that did contribute to further understanding Newgard's life, however, did not suggest anything regarding his death or a suspect's possible motive. An example of this was the texts with his sister, Jenn, because although they were in a minor arguement, there was no evidence to suggest she commited any crimes. I would argue though that all evidence is helpful and necessary when solving a case. It only provides more insight on timeline, cause of death, suspects, and much more.
The overall conclusions that we can make regarding this case is the evidence found and the cause of death. The evidence we investigated was digital evidence, polygraphs, DNA and fingerprints. The digital evidence revealed that Cam Banks texted Marcel (victim) that he was worried about Aiden Santori, thinking he was suspicious. Also, Aiden met Marcel at work before he died. Sadly, the polygraphs didn't tell us much, because the ups and downs of everyone was random and not very disclosing. The DNA showed Aidens hair and saliva on sight of the scene. The hair was next to the victims body, while the gum was underneath the victims car. Lastly, the fingerprints are another clear pointer to Mr. Santori. His prints (as well as the victims; a fight broke out) were found on the bat on the scene. To conclude, the cause was a blow to the head, the mechanism was bleeding out and the manner of deather was a homicide done by Aiden Santori.
Due, to all of the evidence pointing to Aiden Santori, the manner of death was determined to be a homicide. The next steps we recommend for this investigation is to present this evidence before a judge and close the case. In addition, there are still questions regarding the case so these can be answered by examining more evidence.
