Introduction

Intro

Malcolm Gladwell was a writer for The New Yorker, once stated that “People don’t rise from nothing.” He believed that an “outlier” was only exsited because of the society they lived in. I don’t agree with that statement because there are many examples of people that came from nothing to a bigger person in their society. Some of those examples are Cathrine the I going from an orphan to the empress of Russia, Mark Zucherburg creating Facebook and makeing billions of dollars a year and Biddy Mason being a slave to becoming the first female real estate tycoon.

Catherine the I was the Empress of Russia and the second wife of Peter the Great. She was orphaned at the age of three because both her parents died of the plague and the local priest took her in. She was a maid for the priest and when the Russians caught her, they took her to be a maid for them and caught the eye of her future husband. Her and Peter the Great had an affair before marrying him. She married him in 1712 and Peter the Great died in 1725 which made her the new Empress of Russia till her death in 1727. She went from being a poor orphaned maid to a wife of the emperor of Russia then becoming the Empress. she went from rags to riches in a society based of only social classes and those social classes determined who you can marry in those time.

Mark Zucherburg was an average college student that became the number one biggest billionaire under 40 in 2020. He came from a poor family and made Facebook at the age 19 to match students' names with fellow classmates using pictures. He raised over $12.4 million Series A funding before he even turned 21. Zuckerberg is a self-made billionaire and it all started in a college dorm room, which he eventually dropped out so he can focus on the social media network. Once he made Facebook go public, he became the 29th richest person overnight. He went from being an average student to being one of the richest people in the world and he even continued his study in China where he learned fluent Mandarin. Mark Zucherberg was just an ordinary collage student in a middle class family and now he makes billions of dollars with Facebook and other social media platforms that are a part of it.

Biddy Mason was a slave that became the first black landowner. When her slave owner converted to Mormonism, her family went to California and petitioned for her freedom. In 1856, she won her freedom and became a midwife in Los Angeles. She bought a piece of property for $250 there. She then decided to build a commercial where she made around $300,00 dollars becoming the first female real estate tycoon. She went from being the poorest person to making a ton of money. She also did this in a time where it was weird for women and especially a black female would accomplish this. She started from nothing and she even took money and gave it to charities and disaster relief programs. She did this all in a society that was no equal and where black people couldn't do as much as white people could do but she accomplished to have the biggest real estate tycoon of her time

You don’t have to stay in the same place your parents or the area you live in, you can grow and become a better person or the richest person. I don’t agree with the statement “People don’t rise from nothing” because there are many examples of people that came from nothing to a better person or a bigger person in society.
