Drumming in the pacific has cultural importance and is steeped in History.From the island of Tonga,Samoa,Fiji,Hawaii,Niue,and the Cooks.Drumming is the way of life.

In early 1616 Tonga was discovered by European explorers,the next 200 years descriptions of traditional dance and performances were recorded and described by visitors including William Mariner.

Early uses for the Lali included,announcing births and death,and to warn enemies.

The sound of the Lali is made when a drummer strikes the middle,hollowed out resonance chamber.

The wooden walls vibrate and that creates the distinct sound.The sound of a Lali is determined by a number of factors.The material ie type of wood used;the number of vibrations made;the shape of the resonance chamber.

When constructing a log drum of you make the chamber shallow the sound product will have a high pitch.

Modern

times

Like other Polynesians, Tongans anciently used wooden drums, or lali,” which are made by gouging out a slit or trough in a tree log or branch of various sizes: The bigger the branch, the deeper the sound. “Tongans probably borrowed the style of drums we now use from the Samoans in the early 1900s,” Fakatava continued.

Pato can be played live without electricity,but the addition of a microphone means it can also be hooked up to a computer and recorded.The pato drum is a tunnable generating at least two pitch.
