JULIO JARAMILLO

He is an Ecuadorian singer and musician nicknamed The Nightingale of America. He achieved great fame in many countries on that continent for his interpretations of boleros, waltzes, pasillos, tangos and rancheras.

Having recorded around 2,200 songs throughout his career, his most famous song was and is "Nuestro juramento" well known throughout South America. He is considered one of the most beloved singers in Ecuador.

His songs, which speak of love and disagreements, made a deep impression on the audience that reflected on them. Many consider this singer as one of the symbols of national identity. The melodies that he popularized, among which it is worth mentioning From cigar to cigar, My soul, Interrogation, Hate in the blood, I hate you and I love you, Carnival of life or When my guitar cries, are still heard on Latin American radios.

Julio Jaramillo was admitted to the Domínguez clinic in Guayaquil due to gallbladder cramps, and yet, after complications from the operation, he had to be operated on a second time. Thus, on February 9, 1978, according to the medical report, he died of cardiac arrest, although it has been speculated that due to his bohemian life he died of cirrhosis. As soon as the news of his death spread, nearly two hundred thousand people gathered near the clinic, and although he requested on several occasions that they not pay posthumous tributes to him, his remains were veiled for three days in different places such as the facilities of Radio Cristal, the Municipal Palace and the Voltaire Paladines Polo Coliseum.

His musical production is around 400 record productions between Long Plays and 45rpm singles, although unfortunately in Ecuador it has not been possible to have a complete record of his work, so many of his records are unknown in the country. Jaramillo during his 23 years of artistic life recorded more than 2,200 songs.

On the other hand, the Chilean cartoonist Alberto Vivanco in his series of traditional vignettes called "Pinceladas Criollas" affirmed that Jaramillo's economic constraints led him several times, at least in Ecuador, to record with record companies that were outside the law but that they paid him certain sums to solve his needs. The attached list, due to the reasons stated, is incomplete and the years of production are only estimated,36 unlike the production with the Venezuelan company El Disco de Moda (Discomoda) in which the initials of the LPs are compared with those of the orchestra "Los Melódicos" that he recorded for several years with said company.
