Preperation

  • If you are outside during a tornado seek shelter if possible. If you cannot find shelter, instead lie flat and face down in a ditch or low ground.
  • If possible get as far away from cars and trees as possible.

If you are in a building seek shelter in a basement or a low-to-the-ground area.

  • It is important to stay away from windows. Cover your head with your hands, as explained before, and most importantly do not panic.
  • If you happen to be in school during this event you will not be so lucky.

Formation

Formation

  • Tornadoes are often formed when warm, moist air comes north from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air comes south from Canada. Which most commonly meets in the Continental US.

  • Once the two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere.

  • This creates a huge area of spinning wind that stretches 2-6 miles wide. The tornado is usually created inside that range.

  • Tornadoes spin as a result of the updrafts as well as the downdrafts in a storm

  • Tornados often occur in "Tornado Alley" where as the ideal conditions are met as most of the rest of the world have very few places where conditions such as ours for tornados are met.
