In the beginning of the story, Hugo lives in the top of a train station in the early 1900's with his Uncle. They have to run the clocks in the station. He lives with his uncle because his dad died in a fire. In the ramians of the fire, Hugo finds a wind up complex mechanical man that his dad was trying to fix. He took it to his hidden room to try to fix himsef with the notebook his dad had.
In the middle of the story, Hugo steels windup toys from the to booth so he can use the peices for the mechanical man. He gets caught steeling and the guy at the toy booth threatens to burn the notebook and makes Hugo work at the booth. Hugo finds out how to build the mechanical man without the notebook.
Hugo needs a winding key to make the mechanical man draw an unknown picture. He finds the toy keepers grandaughter has a windup key around her neck. He steels it, and brings it into his secret room in the station. She catches him but they both watch the mechanical mans hand move and it shows the signature George Melles. They found out that the toy booth man was the famous George Melles and Hugo lives with him.
Hugo needs a good place to live.
Hugo can't get a good home or fix the mechanical man.
He lives with George Melles and gets all the supplies he needs to finish the mechanical man.
I would give this book 4-5 stars. It really can be very scaary at times and it is very hard to put down.
I would reccomend this book to people that want to be able to read for hours without wanting to stop.
