TIMELINE OF THE HOBBIT

Ch. 1

Event 1

Gandalf, a well-known wizard, pays Bilbo a visit. Thorin Oakenshield and his crew of dwarves are invited to a party that Gandalf tricked into having Bilbo host. A significant number of dwarves arrive at Bilbo's door after Gandalf leaves Bilbo's home and places a sign on the door. All of them are seeking for a competent burglar to join them on their quest. The thirteen dwarfs persuade Bilbo Baggins to accompany them to the Lonely Mountain at this point

Event 2

After the dwarves visit him, Bilbo wakes up late in the morning to find that they have left without him. He is delighted. He enjoys having breakfast in his own home and is stunned when Gandalf whisks him away so he may join the group on their adventure, he yet again becomes a part of their journey.  Thorin and his companions begin to settle in the woods as it grows night. Bilbo makes his way ahead to survey the area. He subsequently manages to have the dwarves kidnapped by trolls, forcing Gandalf and him to save them.  They were going to get cooked and eaten, but Gandalf stalls them until dawn.  Trolls in The Hobbit are said to turn to stone in the daylight, so the group continues.

Event 3

Thorin and his comrades seek shelter from a violent storm in a dry cave. Goblins attack them and take them to the Goblin King. The Goblin King captures everyone but Gandalf, and when the Goblin King plans to eat the dwarfs and the hobbit, Gandalf appears and slays the Goblin King. Bilbo is left behind after falling into a dark pit while attempting to flee the goblins. Without acknowledging that Bilbo has vanished, the dwarfs continue leaving the goblin caves.

Event 4

After his eyes adjust to the darkness of the pit, Bilbo discovers a gold ring on the cold floor and pockets it, oblivious to what it was. He then encounters a slimy, repulsive creature named Gollum, who desires to devour him. Gollum promises to show Bilbo the way out if he can solve the riddles they share back and forth. If Bilbo wins , the exit will be pointed out to him. Gollum sees his ring missing after Bilbo triumphs and accuses him of taking it. When Bilbo discovers the ring's ability to render the bearer invisible, he uses it to his advantage to flee, by following Gollum, who intends to kill him.

Event 5

Bilbo realises he has passed the Misty Mountains and returns to the dwarves and Gandalf. After the group reunites, they embark on the next part of their journey, but they encounter the allies of goblins known as wargs ( wolf like cretures). The wargs alert the goblins, and the goblins strike. Fortunately for the group, the lord of the eagles witnesses the altercation and gathers some of his people to assist in the rescue. They also provide food and rest stops for travellers.

Ch. 8

Event 6

They are led off the path by flickers of light one night in their desperate search for food. Everyone eventually separates, and they all settle in and go to sleep. When Bilbo awakens, he is caught in a sticky web. He breaks free from the web and notices a massive spider approaching him. He kills the spider and sets out to locate the dwarves. Only Bilbo can save the thirteen dwarfs who are in the same situation. He uses his ring to entice the spiders away from his companions. Bilbo defeats the spiders and saves them. The group is unaware, but Thorin has been captured by the elves.

Ch. 9

Event 7

Soon after they escape from the spiders, the group is captured by wood elves. When they don't tell the elves why tey are in the woods they are thrown in the dungeon just like Thorin. Luckily Bilbo escaped because he was wearing his ring and he whispers to the dwarves, plotting their escape. Bilbo finds out about a barrel transportation route, so he frees his friends. He stuffs them into barrels, to carry them out of the Elven lands and closer to The Lonely Mountain. Bilbo himself was not in a barrel, but he was invisible. He grabbed onto a barrel being thrown into the river and floats to Laketown along with the other dwarfs.

Ch. 14

There is a terrifying battle in which Smaug attacks the town of Laketown after realising that the dwarfs got to the mountain with the help of the people of Laketown. Smaug is defeated, and the town is saved, thanks to Bard the Bowman.

Event 8

Ch. 17

At the end of The Hobbit, There is the final battle. This battle is where dwarfs, men, and elves team up against goblins and wolves. It concludes with the Dwarves, Men, and Elves prevailing. Thorin, Kili, and Fili are killed in action, and Thorin reconciles with Bilbo before dying.

Event 9

Ch. 19

Event 10

Bilbo receives his gold following the Battle of the Five Armies (that he was promised at the beginning of the book in a contract written by Thorin). Bilbo then returns to the Shire, accompanied by Gandalf. They meet up with Beorn again and return to Bag End, where he is not welcomed. Many of Bilbo's belongings were stolen while he was gone (since most assumed he had died). He did recover much of his belongings, but he later purchased the majority of them with some of the gold he received from the Lonely Mountain. In the end, Bilbo is relieved to be home once again.
