RICH VS POOR

Perceptual Filters

"WOMEN DON'T BELONG TO A CASTE OR CLASS;

THEIR BEAUTY, GRACE AND NATURAL CHARM

DETERMINE THEIR PLACE IN SOCIETY"

−The Necklace

This quote says that women with beauty have a higher rank in society.

In The Necklace, beautiful Mathilde feels like she is supposed to be rich. This is why she fits in as a rich woman at the ball.

RICH VS POOR

THREATS

Perceived and Real Threats

When Mathilde comes back from the ball, she can't find her diamond necklace that was lent to her by Madame Forestier.

Mathilde and her husband perceive this as a threat because the necklace would be very expensive to pay back.

THREATS

SPOILER ALERT

This threat isn't real because Madame Forestier's necklace is actually a fake that costs only 400 francs.

CONFLICT

There are 3 types of conflict in this story.

Types of Conflict

2. EXTERNAL

1. INTERNAL

Mathilde wishes to be rich and she is jealous of her wealthy friend, Madame Forestier.

Mathilde lost Madame Forestier's diamond necklace and has to earn enough money to buy a new one.

3. INTERGROUP

The overall conflict and theme is that the high class treats the low class unfairly

CONFLICT

APPROACH

Approaches to Conflict

Madame and Monsieur Loisel's approach to the conflict is avoiding. They lie to Madame Forestier and say the necklace needs to get fixed, when they are actually trying to replace it.

APPROACH

YEARS PASS

YEARS PASS

Mathilde and Monsieur Loisel grow old from stress and guilt.

They made many loans and sold their belongings to pay for the necklace. After they returned it to Madame Forestier, she told them that her's was a fake.

They went from jeweler to jeweler until they found the exact necklace for 36 thousand francs.

They searched the ballroom and put out advertisements in the newspaper.

They told Madame Forestier that they broke the clasp and had to get it mended.

SOLUTION

Alternative Approach

AVOIDING

COLLABORATE

Madame Loisel should have collaborated with Madame Forestier instead of avoiding her. If she had told her what really happened, Madame Forestier would probably have told her where to buy a fake necklace for only 400 francs.

SOLUTION

EXAMPLE

EXAMPLE

When this Approach Worked in History

In World War II, America could have not gotten involved with Europe to avoid the risk.

Instead, they chose to collaborate with England and France to fight Germany.

Madame Loisel should have collaborated with Madame Forestier to buy a new necklace, instead of avoiding the risk of her being mad.

THE END!
