The Significance of This Event

The Significance

The Players

One of the most notable facts about the players is that all of them were starting players, making it hard for pretty much the one guy on the field that was not fixing the game to win the game by himself.

The Players Are:

  • Eddie Cicotte Starting Pitcher
  • Lefty Williams Starting Pitcher
  • Joe Jackson Oufielder
  • Arnold Gandil First Baseman
  • Charles Risberg Shortstop
  • George Weaver Infielder
  • Oscar Felsch Center Fielder
  • Fred McMullin Utility Infielder

Why They Did It

Why They did it

Contrary to popular belief, the 1919 White Sox were one of the highest paid teams in baseball at the time. Even though their jerseys were barely ever washed, they still made a lot of money. Their manager hardly ever was nice to the players.

Reasons as to why they did it:

  • Denied a bonus because they couldn't play in games to give them the bonus
  • Revenge on the Manager
  • Being Greedy and wanting more money

Rule Changes and Punishment

All 8 of the players were tried for throwing the series. The following 3 admitted to it

  • Eddie Cicotte
  • Lefty Williams
  • Joe Jackson

Every single one of the players was found guilty for throwing the series, and was banned from baseball for life. As to rule changes, MLB Rule 21 was created. One of the rules on there states exactly what happened in the Scandal. “Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible.”
