Deforestation

What is deforestation?

What is deforestation

Deforestation is the cutting down of large areas trees and forests. Reasons for deforestation include wood, creating new areas for cities and crops, areas to mine, and illegal logging.

Pros and Cons

Some pros of deforestation include new areas for humans to live, paper and other materials made of wood, and mining areas that look for supplies such as iron and gold. Cons of deforestation are global warming and endangerment of plants and animals. When trees are cut down, the methods such as burning the trees release carbon dioxide into the air. With the trees being lost, there is nothing to take in the carbon dioxide, and the greenhouse effect takes place. This is when greenhose gasses such as CO2 Absorb the heat radiation from the sun that should've been reflected by the atmosphere and spread it around earth. Plants and animals are hurt by deforestation because their habitat is destroyed and burned. This kills many plants and animals, and the survivors are forced to find a new habitat, which can cause overcrowding and make animals that wouldn't be in that enviroment thriw off the ecosystem, causing diseases and the death of even more plants and animals.

Pros and Cons

Deforestation in SA v.s. the US

Deforestation in SA v.s. the US

As most people know, deforestation does occur in the U.S. According to globalforestwatch.org, "From 2001 to 2021, the United States has lost 16% of tree coverage. While this may seem like a lot, it is nothing compared to South America. South America makes up 54% of the world's deforestation, which is a shocking amount. Trees in the U.S are deforested the same way as South America, with slash ad burn farming being the main strategy. In South America, trees are deforested in the Amazon Rainforest, whereas the main place of deforestation in the U.S is in California.

Solutions

I think that one of the best solutions for deforestation is for the government to put laws on how many trees can be cut down per year. After they cut they're yearly section down, they should replant all the trees in that area, and next year they chop a different area, and so on and so on. That way there's a steady cycle for trees being cut down. Another solution could be to limit the amount of products you buy that aren't eco-friendly or are harvested by deforestation. If more people buy less products that are created this way, the less trees that the people that getting the wood will cut down.
