Introduction to Prepositions

A word or phrase that connects a noun or pronoun to a verb or adjective in a sentence.

A preposition is a bridge in the world of words and grammar.

A preposition is a bridge that comes before a noun (or pronoun) and connects it to the rest of the sentence.

NOTE: Without an object OUTSIDE is an adverb.

If you are wondering if a word is a preposition test it by moving the word and words following it to the front of the sentence:

The grass behind the house is dying

The grass is dying behind the house.

Behind the house the grass is dying.

Prepositional phrases can be moved in a sentence without changing the meaning.

A preposition must always be followed by a noun or pronoun in a sentence.
