Line of Reasoning Tree

CJ P.2

Context:

  • Malcolm Gladwell claims: "People don't rise from nothing"
  • At all levels, our definitions of success vary. Money is a common indicator of success.
  • From the start of civilization, success has been important, and how we got there is important, too.

Claim: People don't rise from nothing; instead, rags-to-riches stories are the result of hard work and seized opportunities.

Claim

Agree,

but qualify

Sub-claim: Success come through hard work and dedication.

Perseverance leads people to opportunities that can then lead them to the next step of success.

Hard Work

Bill Gates

Sub-claim: Opportunities are also required for success

In almost every case, success starts when an opportunity (synonymous to advantage) is taken; therefore, opportunities are required for success.

Hidden advantages included:

  • Education
  • Finances
  • Social Status

Walt Disney

"In rare cases, people can sometimes get very lucky."

Limitation

Rebuttal: It is a limitation that there are exceptions to the rule. Sometimes, a person may not work hard or may not be given opportunities, still becoming successful. However, almost all cases involve some type of work and opportunity—big or small.

Conclusion:

The successful person must be a hard worker and must have the right opportunities.

That person rose from something—whether it was more obvious or more obscure.
