- Social Contract theories became popular in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries among theorists such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
- The agreement of all individuals subject to collectively social arrangements. The view that a persons moral or political obligations are dependent upon a contract they agreed to in the society which they live.
Social Contract in "The Hunger Games"
The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games film begins on the day of the reaping in District 12. Katniss (the main character) plays a major role in the reaping.
The reaping is a nerve-wracking time because it determines which boy and girl, ages 12 to 18, will serve as the district's tributes in the Hunger Games.
Two tributes are drawn in each of the 12 districts, and those tributes are sent to an arena where they fight until only one tribute remains alive.
The winner gets to return home, and the winner’s district is showered with gifts mainly food.
The Games purpose is to punish the 12 districts of Panem. The Capitol wants to remind them of how the 13th district was destroyed for its uprising against the cruel Capitol.

- A government is based on the people. The people have the choice to overthrow the government if it no longer works in their best interest.
- Citizens have natural rights even if some of those natural freedoms are compromised for common laws of society
- The right to own property.

- The Capitol abuses the right to land by dividing it into districts and forcing them to produce materials that is for the Capitol. Each districts sees no gain and continues to live in poverty.
- The lack of say that citizens have against their government defies Locke's social contract because they cannot simply alter their government or overthrow it.

Thomas Hobbes perception of Social Contract was each individual’s actions are bound only by their personal power and conscience.
Hobbes gives many rational reasons on why humans would voluntarily give up their natural freedom to receive the benefits of political order.
Hobbes also believed that human beings “state of nature" is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short If there were no social contract in existence.
We may not notice it but we do all abide to a social contract everyday.
The Hunger Games is a war forcing kids to fight to the death against each other.
Everyone in the arena aim to kill each other to be the loan victor.
Hobbes discusses human nature marked by fear and violence in his perception of social contract.

- The government was not happy about this and because it was televised they went along with it but threatened their lives.
- The capitols social contract with the districts and Hunger games contestants were testing and put in jeopardy when this happened.
