Benjamin Rush was born on January 4, 1746 in Byberry Philadelphia, PA. Benjamin's parents are John Rush and Susanna Rush. He was one out of seven children.
Benjamin Rush was appointed Surgeon-general to the armies of the middle department of the Continential Army in 1777. He was treasurer of the U.S. Mint from 1797 to 1813. He also was the professer of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1813. He was named President of the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery in 1803. After his death, he was named as the "Father of American Psychiatry" by the American Psychiatric Association in 1965. Benjamin Rush was elected to the Pennsylvania Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Benjamin published "medical inquiries and observations upon the diseases of the mind" in 1812. In 1776, Benjamin became a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress.
Benjamin Rush encouraged the author of the Common Sense pamphlet, Thomas Paine, to write it.
Benjamin Rush signed the Declaration of Independence to represent Pennsylvania in 1776.
The Declaration of Independence contains the ideas or goals of our country. It also contains the complaints of colonists against the British king, and the arguments the colonists used to explain why they wanted to be free of the British rule. The Declaration of Independence led our country to their independence from Britain. It contained ideas that citizens should have important things in this "new world" including liberty and equality.

Bejamin Rush's Death & Legacy
Benjamin Rush died on April 19, 1813 in Philadelphia, PA at the age of 68 because of typhus fever. He is buried at Christ Church Burial Grounds. Benjamin is remembered today for his political activities during the American Revolution, including signing the Declaration of Independence. Also, Benjamin established the Philadelphia Dispensary to give free medical care to the poor in 1784. He wrote the first American chemistry textbook in 1770.
