BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

From early March 1974, the situation in the Israel-Syria sector became increasingly unstable, and firing intensified. The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was established on 31 May 1974 by Security Council resolution 350 (1974), following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan.

GEOGRAPHIC SITUATION

- Is Located in the Middle East, between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights, is a region in the Levant.

- Spanning about 1,800 square kilometres (690 sq mi). The region defined as the Golan Heights differs between disciplines: as a geological and biogeographical region.

HISTORY

On 6 October 1973, war erupted in the Middle East between Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights. On 24 October, this war reached a critical stage, the Security Council decided to set up a second United Nations Emergency Force II (UNEF II).

And from March 1974 the situation became increasingly unstable creating, an Agreement on Disengagement between Israeli and Syrian forces.

The Agreement was signed on 31 May 1974 and, on the same day, the Security Council adopted resolution 350 (1974) by which it set up the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

UNEF II

The Second United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF II) was established by United Nations General Assembly, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 340 (1973), to supervise the ceasefire between Egyptian and Israeli forces at the end of Yom Kippur War (also known as the October War), and following of the agreement of 18 January 1974 and 4 September 1975, to supervise the redeployment of Egyptian and Israeli forces and to man and control the buffer zones established under those agreements. The force was withdrawn in July 1979

In The Present

Since the last resolution, UNDOF has remained in the area to maintain the ceasefire between Israeli and Syrian forces.

However, during the Syrian conflict, the ceasefire was breached. On June 29, 2017, the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2361 (2017) renewing UNDOF's mandate until December 2017 and outright condemning the use of heavy weapons.

MANDATE

Security Council resolution 350 (1974) of 31 May 1974.

- Maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Syria.

- Supervise the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces.

- Supervise the areas of separation and limitation.

Since then, the mandate of UNDOF has been renewed every six months.
