"[When looking back at these films] Han Solo was going to marry Leia, and you look back and say, 'Should he be a cold-blooded killer?' Because I was thinking mythologically--should he be a cowboy, should he be John Wayne? And I said, 'Yeah, he should be John Wayne.' And when you're john Wayne, you don't shoot people [first]--you let them have the first shot. It's a mytholoical reality what we hope our society pays attention to."

Because of his experiences with betrayal as a young man, in Star Wars Han Solo is an untrustworthy and selfish rogue who is deeply skeptical and seemingly incapable of loyalty. However, because of his friendship with Luke Skywalker and his experiences belonging to the Rebel Alliance, by the time of The Force Awakens, Han Solo evolves into a selfless heroic character with a powerful belief in the principles of The Force.
