Summary of the Narcissus and Echo Myth
Event #1: Juno curses Echo. “You shall forfeit the use of that tongue with which you have cheated me, except for that one purpose you are so fond of—reply. You shall still have the last word, but no power to speak first.”
Event # 2: Echo discovers Narcissus (the youth) and falls in love with him. "She loved him and followed his footsteps."
Event #3: Narcissus rejects Echo and leaves her broken-hearted. "He started back, exclaiming, “Hands off! I would rather die than you
should have me!”"
Event #4: Echo flees, hides in a cave and slowly but surely, transforms into a rock. All that remained was her voice. "Her bones were changed into rocks and there was nothing left of her but her voice."
Event #5: Nymph prayer is answered and Narcissus gets a taste of his own medicine. He goes to a mysterious fountain and falls in love with a "spirit" in the water; the spirit happens to be his own reflection. "He stooped down to drink, and saw his own image in the water; he thought it was some beautiful water-spirit living in the fountain."
Event #6: Narcissus dies and the nymphs hold a funeral in his memory. "They prepared a funeral pile and would have burned the body, but it was nowhere to be found; but in its place a flower, purple within, and surrounded with white leaves, which bears the name and preserves the memory of Narcissus."
General Setting: Takes place in the forest.
Specific Setting: Echo's cave, the mysterious fountain in the woods.
Echo is cursed by Juno. Soon after, she falls in love with Narcissus.
JUNO ECHO
Narcissus and Echo cross paths with each other. Narcissus rejects Echo and leaves her heart-broken. Echo transforms into a rock.
A nymph, who has also been hurt by Narcissus, prays that he will experience the same pain she has felt. A goddess hears this and grants her prayer.
Narcissus falls in love with his own reflection and Echo replies to his cries of anguish.
Narcissus dies and the nymphs of the forest hold a funeral in honor of his life and memory.
General Conflicts: Love, jealousy, lust, obsession, superiority, arrogance.
Specific Conflicts: Juno becomes jealous of the forest nymphs. Echo become obsessed with Narcissus. Narcissus rejects Echo because of arrogance. Narcissus suffers from a prayer that gives him unrequited love. Narcissus withers away to nothing despite knowing that the water spirit is his own reflection.
