Wound healing process

Why it is so important?

  • The skin is the largest organ system of the body.

  • Protection against mechanical forces and infections, fluid imbalance, and thermal regulation.

  • Wound healing is an important physiological process to maintain the integrity of skin after trauma.

Abstract

Phase number 1- Hemostasis

Hemostasis

  • Natural process that stops blood loss when an injury occurs.

  • It involves three steps:

(1) vascular spasm- vasoconstriction

(2) platelet plug formation

(3) coagulation

Vasoconstriction

Is a reflex in which blood vessels narrow to increase blood pressure

1

Platelets plug formation

Involves the activation, aggregation, and adherence of platelets into a plug that serves as a barrier against blood flow.

2

Coagulation

Coagulation involves a complex cascade in which a fibrin mesh is cleaved from fibrinogen , Fibrin acts as a “molecular glue” during clot formation, holding the platelet plug together.

3

Phase number 2-

Inflammatory

Inflammatory

  • The body’s natural response to injury.
  • Once hemostasis has been achieved, blood

vessels then dilate to allow essential cells:

antibodies, white blood cells, growth factors,

enzymes and nutrients to reach the wounded

area.

Phase number 3-

Proliferation

Proliferation

The wound is ‘rebuilt’ with new granulation tissue which is comprised of collagen and extracellular matrix and into which a new network of blood vessels develop, a process known as ‘angiogenesis’.

Phase number 4-

Maturation

Maturation

Occurs once the wound has closed.

This phase involves remodelling of collagen, reducces of cellular activity and decrease the number of blood vessels in the wounded area.
