Haitian/French Revolution

1789

French Revolution:

King Louis XVI summons Estates-General to discuss financial problems. The first estate was made up of the French nobles. The second estate were the Clergy, and the third estates was made up of the common people. When the common people declared themselves the National Assembly, the King locked them out of the meeting room, invalidating their vote.

The common people found another room ad took the Tennis Court Oath, They stated they would not stop fighting until a Constitution was created.

1789

French Revolution: The common people, now the National Assembly, stormed the prison Bastille, mainly for their guns. This showed the king that the National Assembly were serious about a fair constitution. Soon after, the National Assembly created the Deceleration of Mans Rights. This laid out rights the applied to everyone, not just the First and Second Estates

1791

Haitian Revolution: The Petit-Blancs (poor white people) of San Dominique were upset at France and decided to over throw French rule and make San Dominique and independent colony. They felt oppressed due to not being able to affords slaves, and wanted to take power into their own hands. They seized the city Port au Prince. Following after, the National Assembly, who was fighting the French Nobles at that time, gave freedom to all people of color. This meant all the slaves, which made up 97% of the Haitian population, were free.

Haitian Revolution: Once all the people of color were free, the Petit-Blancs and wealthy people of color begun disputes. However, the fighting didn't begin until the Haitian slave revolt of 1971. It was one of the few successful slave revolts in history.

1971

1793

French Revolution: The people of Frace captured King Louis XIV and execured him. This meant that the people of France no longer had a leader and was currently

in shambles. Haitian Revolution: with Spain at war with France, they recruted L'Ouverture as a general. With the Spainish and Haitian alliance, France couldn't regain control over Haiti.

1973

French Revolution: With two parties now fighting for control, France was sent into a period of mass execution of terror. The major reason as to why mass violoence occured was to "purify France of foregin enemies

1974

Haitian Revolution: Seeing that Haiti would not submit to France, France offically abolished slavery, meaning that all the slaves on Haiti were free. This set the stage for Haiti becoming an independent country. With the people of Haiti offically free, L'Ouverture rejoined the French militia to fight off the Spainish and British.

French Revolution: With the reign of terror coming to an end, one of the leaders trying to gain control, Robspierre, was arrested and killed. His death was significant due to the fact that he was an encourager for death by guillotine.

1795

French Revolution: The directory was the government program the French created after the finally regained control. Their main purpose was to oversee reforms and create laws to try and France back on their feet.

Haitian Revolution: with the conflict between France, Britain ans Spain wrapping up, the French and Spanish signed a peace treaty, and the British surrendered. This finally allowed Haiti to begin reforms and establish themsleves as an independent colony

1797-1798

Haitian Revolution: This British attack Haiti again, in attempts of gaining their territory. And because Haiti was indepedent, it would have been foolish for France to get involved. However, the attempt was futile, as Haiti won the civil war

1799

French Revolution: with the Directory failing, Napolean comes into play. Taking over France, Napolean becomes one fo the most important figures in French history. He attempts to gain control of many places, Haiti being one of them

1802-1804

Haitian revolution: With Napolean now in power, he anted control of Haiti back. He also wanted to reintroduce slavery. He sent his brother in aw, Le' Clerc to reinstate slvery in Haiti. He aslo arrested L' Ouverture. This caused fighting to break out. The French, once again, lost to the Haitians. After the fighting, the Haitians wrote thier constitution.
