Death

Cardiac Arrest

  • Cardiac arrest will ultimately result if respiratory arrest is not corrected.
  • As time passes during cardiac arrest irreversible damage to organs, especially the brain.
  • Care during this stage requires quality CPR, an AED

Hypoxic Convulsions

  • Lack of Oxygen can result in convulsions.
  • Additional agonal breaths may displace lung surfactant resultant in froth/foam from the guests mouth

Unconsciousness

  • Unconsciousness will occur shortly after respiratory arrest.
  • May submerge
  • Rescued during this stage the guest may begin breathing once the face is removed from the water and the airway opened.

Respiratory Arrest

  • CO2 build-up triggers an automatic response to breathe
  • If submerged, water will cross the larynx and cause laryngeal spasm leading to respiratory arrest.

Surprise

  • Panic
  • Struggling to remain on surface.
  • Erratic and ineffective arm and leg movement
  • Head back in effort to keep mouth above water
  • Breath holding if submerging.
  • This stage may last up to 30 seconds.
  • Rescued during this stage the guest rarely needs any further care.
