Crazy Rich Asians

The book addresses issues and conflicts that the main character, Rachel Chu, must experience as a Chinese-American woman. It shows the contrast between Rachel’s humble Chinese-American upbringing, which closely ties in with the American dream, as she was raised by a single mother to become a successful Economics professor at NYU, and Nick Young, a wealthy socialite from Singapore. In Crazy Rich Asians, it poses the question: what truly makes someone Asian?

A story of boy meets girl, they fall in love, and they live happily ever after. However, to describe Crazy Rich Asians just like that would cheapen the plot. It combats economic and racial stereotypes, cultural values, and whether or not the Chinese-American main character, Rachel Chu, will ever be Chinese enough for her boyfriend’s family approval. It leaves the reader wondering: what makes someone “truly” Asian?

Main Characters

Rachel Chu: A brilliant Chinese-American Economics professor at NYU. Raised by a single mother who immigrated from China, Rachel is more American than Chinese, and arguably could be the poster child for the American dream. Her cultural identity and overall self-esteem is challenged upon meeting her boyfriend Nick's mother, Eleanor.

Nick Young

Rachel's handsome and wealthy boyfriend, and a history professor at NYU. When things got serious with Rachel, he asked her to come with him to Singapore to meet his family. He is a good man, and moved to the United States to escape his overbearing mother and be his own person.

Eleanor Young
