Water Street's Dining Room is a hub for activity on our campus. Thanks to the generosity of many church, business and individual partners, Water Street Mission's Dining Room was renovated in 2016 to provide efficient and working equipment and an inviting atmosphere.

  • Over 140,000 meals were served in our dining hall last year.
  • Originally built in 1988, the dining hall experienced a makeover in 2016 to improve efficiency and create an environment of hope and dignity.
  • Normally a 6-week renovation, our Mission Makeover project was completed in just 7 days through the 24/7 efforts of our contractor partners and the generosity of our Lancaster county supporters.

  • In 2017 we served over 1,400 unique guests.
  • Water Street Mission averages over 20 new guest intakes per week.
  • The Access Center was renovated in 2016 to provide a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

Case Managers meet with guests shortly after intake in order to assess individual needs and ensure they receive the resources and guidance to get on a path to restoration.

Story

Every journey is unique. With every new guest our Case Managers encounter, they help determine what is needed to provide a hand up and path to restoration.

Facts

  • Roughly 50% of the people we serve are women and children.

  • Through meeting with a Case Manager and Life Coach, some decide to go beyond emergency shelter services and enter our Residential program.

  • Over 60% of our guests now opt to create an Individual Action Plan to help guide them on their new path.

Whether a guest need to build a resume, complete their GED or other online course of study, is looking for a job or housing, or wants to participate in classes for spiritual or life-skills growth, Water Street's Enrichment Center provides resources and guidance to help.

Our staffed Enrichment Center provides the equipment and guidance guests need to help them advance on their new paths.

Story

Through guidance he received at Water Street Mission, Jefferson was able to get a scholarship to Thaddeus Stevens. He graduated with a degree in automotive technology. He now enjoys a new job and whole new life!

  • In addition to staff, our generous supporters volunteer to help guests in locating jobs and housing, studying to complete their GEDs, and crafting their resumes.

  • Computer and A/V equipment is up-to-date and maintained by an IT professional.

Through partnerships with local resources like the Naamen Center (drug and alcohol counseling) and Philhaven (behavioral health care), Water Street is able to provide vital services on site - without the addition of staff.

In addition to Naamen and Philhaven, Water Street offers group and individual counseling, classes of all types to help guests express and deal with core issues in their lives.

Don needed help getting past addictions that took root in his efforts to silence his pain and bitterness. He's now found new life and a desire to help others!

  • Last year, Water Street conducted over 400 behavioral health counseling appointments.

  • In addition to Naamen and Philhaven, Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Center meets with individuals who need counseling through their pregnancies.

Through partnerships with local healthcare organizations like LGH, and the volunteer efforts of many local doctors and nurses, Water Street Health Services is able to offer quality medical care to guests who have been unable to properly care for their bodies.

If you hadn't come in through our Access Center doors, you'd never know that Water Street Health Services wasn't a typical private practitioner you might normally visit.

Our partnership with organizations like LGH help provide excellent service for our guests while significantly saving on Emergency Room visits.

Facts

  • Water Street Health Services provided over 1,900 medical visits last year.

  • With only 2 nurses on staff, local doctors and nurses volunteer to provide services for our guests.

  • LGH provides medicine and a great deal of needed lab work.

  • Helping guests care for chronic and previously untreated conditions like Type 2 Diabetes helps improve and prolong their lives.

Most don't think of dentistry when they think about a rescue mission. At Water Street, our dental health services perform a vital role in restoring health and hope and communicating dignity, value and love for all of our guests.

Our dental care center houses three operatives and one of the first trauma-informed dental treatment rooms in Pennsylvania.

  • The 3 operatories were provided 100% by individual donations and corporate gifts-in-kind.

  • In 2017, 1 part-time dentist and 2 staff worked with 39 professionals who volunteered to serve our guests.

  • Our dental health center served 380 patients through 1,376 individual appointments.

  • Our trauma-informed dental room resulted from a partnership between Water Street, Lancaster General Health, F&M University, and Saint Joseph's Health Ministries who all received a grant from the Lancaster Community Foundation.

Our Outreach Center provides a food pantry of fresh and packaged goods for our often overlooked Lancaster Neighbors, many of whom represent the working poor who fall below the poverty line.

Before going home to be with the Lord, Bob Stoner served our Lancaster community through Water Street's Outreach Center every Tuesday for over ten years!

Facts

  • On average over 600 people a week are served through our Outreach Center.

  • We are able to minimize spoilage by distributing food through Outreach that is not able to be used in our Dining Hall.

  • For our working poor neighbors, the Outreach Center helps bridge the gap between their paychecks and bills.
