Toussaint L'Overture

L'Overture

Toussaint: Haitian General and leader of the revolution.

L'Overture led slaves in holding off French and Britain Forces between 1791 and 1798.

By 1801 with the help of L'Overture, the revolution expanded to Saint Domingo ( Dominican Republic)

A series of national reforms sweep through France from September 1793 through October 1795. The measures include the abolition of colonial slavery, economic measures to aid the poor, and support for public education.

4 February 1794

The Convention officially abolishes in France and French territories, including Saint-Domingue.

Rebelling against the planters Aug 21, 1791, by 1792 they controlled 1/3 of the Island.

24 september 1791 -26 September 1791: France's National Assembly denied the May 15th degree.

They responded by siezing ( captureing) Port-au-Prince Capital, They cut off thier water supply and blocked all incoming food supplies

Le Cap; (an important commercial and cultural center in French colonial Saint-Domingue) is Burned down by the slaves.

1795-1804

June 1796 Spanish rule over the colonies are gone

1799 Bonaparte re-stores Pre-Revolution Status.

18 November 1803: Battle of Vertires: Last Battle to win the revolution.

1January 1804: Dessalines Declares Haiti INDEPENDENT!

France is the first nation to reconize its independence.
