Louis Armstrong (Satchmo)

1901-1971

"When the Saints Go Marching In"

(Featuring an integrated band)

Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong is one of the most famous trumpet players of all time.

He was often called 'Satchmo' because of the way he played trumpet--other musicians said his mouth looked like a satchel (a suitcase).

He was famous for his music, and he also spoke out for the rights of all people.

"What A Wonderful World"

Probably his most famous song!

Billie Holiday (Lady Day)

1915-1959

Singing with Louis Armstrong in a movie, 1947

Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan to poor teenage parents in 1915. She had a very hard life from childhood to adulthood, but she often used her struggles to create more beautiful music.

Her music is meant to inspire and to point out problems in the world, and to show people overcoming struggle.

One of her last performances in 1957

Sidney Bechet

1897-1959

Sidney Bechet

Sidney Bechet was another famous American who traveled to France to have his music recognized.

He is possibly one of the first truly successful American Jazz musicians, and was often a more populat performer than his good friend Louis Armstrong. Bechet is famous for his playful, strong rhythms and humor.

Bechet and Armstrong recorded this together in 1925--Bechet on Saxophone, and Armstrong on Trumpet!
