Sujud Sehw

Introduction & Foundation

Al Sehw means forgetfulness

Introduction & Foundation

- Sujud Al Sehw is two prostrations and a sitting in between at the end of Salaat, after or before Tasleem, followed with Tasleem to rectifiy an unintentional mistake in Salat.

Ruling of Sujud Al Sehw

- You must do Sujud Al Sehw to fix any unintentional mistakes in Salaat. Although some Uluma say that it is Sunnah. Sujud Al Sehw is a must.

Reasons of Sujud Al Sehw

Reasons of Sujud Al Sehw

  • Adding a Rukn of Salat, such as Ruku3 or Sujood, unintentionally.
  • Taking away/omitting a Rukn or an obligation of Salah unintentionally.
  • Uncertainty(50/50)
  • Doubt(50/50)

General Rules to Keep in Mind

  • Sujud Al Sehw is only done one no matter how many reasons for it.
  • Adding to Salat calls for Sujood Al Sehw to be after Tasleem.
  • Taking away/omitting from Salah calls for Sujud Al Sehw before Tasleem.
  • Fixing taking away from Salat take precedence over fixing adding to it.

Adding an

Act of Salah

- Sujud Al-Sehw fixes only matters we do unintentionally.

- If an act of Salat is added

deliberately, the person has to stop the Salaat, make Tawbah for breaching the boundaries of Allah (SWT), then repeat the entire Salat.

Adding an act of Salah

Adding an act of Salah Unintentionally

If you add an act of Salat unintentionally:

Adding an Act of Salah Unintentionally

  • You stop the extra act if you realize your mistake while doing it
  • Go back to the correct act (part) you should've been in.
  • Complete Salah in its correct form.
  • At the end of the Salaat, you have prayed the entire Salaat, but added to it one or more acts this calls for Sujood Al-Sehw to be after Tasleem

Omiting an Act of Salat

Taking away a Rukn(Ruku,Sujud,Fatiha,last Tashahud)

Omiting an Act of Salat

- Taking away a Rukn deliberately is breaching the boundaries of Allah(SWT). Tawbah must be made and Salaat must be repeated.

One

One

- If you miss a Rukn unintentionally, and remember it before you got to the the same Rukn’s position in the next Rak3ah:

  • Stop what you’re doing as soon as you remember.
  • Go to the Rukn that you missed (where you’re supposed to be).
  • Continue your Salaat from there.
  • At the end of Salaat, you will conclude that you performed all the acts of Salaat but added a few unintentionally. As a result, you make Sujood Al-Sehw after Tasleem, then make Tasleem.

Two

If you miss a Rukn but do not realize you missed it until you get to its position in the Rak3ah or after, what should you do?

  • Cancel the Rak’aa during which you missed the Rukn
  • Then look back at your Salaat and conclude what you added and what you missed, and based on that, do sujud Sehw
  • If the cancelled Rak'ah - when remembered leads to missing the first Tashahud- then Sujud Sehw should be done before Tasleem, otherwise after Tasleem

Taking Away An Obligation From Salaat

Taking Away An Obligation From Salaat

- Taking away a Wajib (first Tashahud, saying Subhana Rabia Al-a’la, Subhana A’laa,...) deliberately is breaching the boundaries of Allah(SWT). Tawbah must be made and Salaat must be repeated

Situation 1

- If you miss a Wajib unintentionally, then you have 3 situations:

  • Situation 1: You miss a wajib, but you remember it before you leave its position.

  • What to do? Do the Wajib, and continue your Salaat from there and you do nothing else.

Situation 2

  • Situation 2: You miss a Wajib, but you remember it after you left its position about half the way.
  • What to do? Go back to the Wajib, do it, and continue your Salaat normally from there. At the end, Do Sujud Sehw after Tasleem.

Situation 2

Situation 3

  • Situation 3: You miss a Wajib, but you remember it after you left fully its position and you went to the next Rukn position.

  • What to do? Do not back to the Wajib to do it, and continue your Salaat normally from there. At the end, Do Sujud Sehw before Tasleem.

Situation 3

Doubt & Uncertainty

Doubt & Uncertainty

Uncertainty

Uncertainty

- This situation arises when you become confused whether you prayed 1 or 2 Rak’aat, 2 or 3 Rak’aat, 3 or 4 Rak’aat, made 1 or 2 Sajdas, …but you lean towards one situation more than the other.

What to do:

  • Act based on what you lean towards the most
  • Continue your Salaat from there
  • Do Sujud Sehw before Tasleem

Doubt

Doubt

- This situation arises when you become confused whether you prayed 1 or 2 Rak’aat, 2 or 3 Rak’aat, 3 or 4 Rak’aat, made 1 or 2 Sajdas, …and you can’t lean towards one situation over the other.

What to do:

  • Act based on what you are sure of and that is the least
  • Continue your Salaat from there
  • Do Sujud Sehw after Tasleem
