THE SCALE

The Scale

History and Rationale

History and Rationale

Created by Jones and Paulhus in 2013

  • Intended to combine three traits which previously had required three different assessments

Created in conjunction with Paulhus and Williams’ 2002 work which changed the research direction away from studying the traits individually

Previous measures

  • Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (SRP-3)
  • Psychopathic Personality Inventory - Revised
  • The Dirty Dozen

Administration

Administration

Commonly presented as an online survey, asking for demographic information and then presenting the 27 items, randomised and with reverse scoring items

During the initial testing the survey, then 41 items, was made available online with $50 compensation for completion.

During re-testing, the current 27 item version was used, again online and with $50 compensation for completion.

Scoring

Scoring

A 5 point Likert scale is used.

Typically appears in the form:

Strongly disagree (1), Disagree (2), Neutral (3), Agree (4), Strongly Agree (5)

Scores are then calculated, following reverse scoring, and presented as an average score for each trait.

Scores may also be presented as a percentile, as is a common online format.

Managing the Dark Triad in the workplace

Strengths

Strengths

  • Consists only of 27 items
  • Easy to understand and comprehend
  • Has shown a strong test-re-test reliability
  • Indicates a high predictive reliability factor

Limitations

Limitations

  • Can cause high social desirability
  • Creates misleading or untrue results from participants
  • A high intercorrelation was detected, showing low independence of sub-scales

Improvements

Improvements

  • A social desirability scale to be completed before the taking of the SD3.

  • Alternative questions to be created to reduce intercorrelation.
