Reading

Yesterday, I ate a huge bowl of Mum's homemade tomato soup. It was delicious! However, after and hour or so I got a stomach ache and I started to feel a bit sick. Another hour later, I started to get a red rash on my skin too and it was really itchy. Do you think I could be allergic to tomatoes or could it be something else I ate?

Comment:

It sounds to me like you have a food intolerance. Stop eating tomatoes for a while and see symptoms go away. Then try to eat less of them. Although you can probably still eat a slice of tomato in your sandwiches, I'd suggest your mum makes you different kinds of homemade soups in the future. Don't worry you'll probably grow out of this food intolerance. Despite tomatoes being very good for you many people are sensitive to them.

Contrast linkers

Use of English

Contrast linkers are used to contrast information.

In spite of and despite are followed by gerund (-ing form) or by a noun. example:

  • Despite the pain in his leg he completed the marathon.
  • In spite of not having an umbrella, I walked home in the rain.
