The POV and why the need for the rain in the story
POV: In the story the point of view is the authors point of view. This is a hook because the story starts out by saying "The boy lay on the the sidewalk bleeding in the rain." (On The Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter).
This was to show the reader that this story would most likely be a dramatic and sad story.
Opportunity to be Saved
Andy had many opportunities to be saved. Though social classes and gang rivalry had a key role in why people did not help him.
Oppurtunity #1:
Andy's first opportunity to be saved was when a drunk man came across him. He was so drunk he hadn't realized the pain Andy was currently in. He left Andy in the alley way thinking he was just too drunk to get up.
Andy's second opportunity to be saved was because of a couple. A boy named Freddie and a girl named Angela. They noticed Andy when the heard him groaning in pain. They came over and saw his purple jacket. The purple jacket was the reason the couple didn't help Andy. The purple jacket showed that Andy was apart of the gang the Royals. The couple was scared that a rival gang would hunt them down if they helped Andy. The couple left Andy laying in the alley.
This was not ok for the couple to do. People should stop and help other people in need, especially if the person is dying. No matter what a person looks like or acts like, no matter if a person is apart of something your not, you should help them. Its just common decency and humane.
Andy's third oppurtunity came into play when an old lady went outside to take out the trash. Andy was giving it everything he had to get her attention. But, she didn't hear him because she was so old and wasn't able to hear very well.
Andy's Emotions
Andy's Emotions
Quote:
"I don't wan't to die. I haven't lived yet.
When Andy says this quote, he realizes what will happen to him in a matter of time. After the third person didn't help him, he had to believe in help. But in reality, there wasnt much hope left out in the world. When Laura came to Andy, it was too late. So by that time, Andy was already gone.
Symbols
In the beginning the jacket symbolized intimidation and respect, but as the sotry moved on it symbolizes lost opportunities. It also symbolizes sacrafice. Andy put his life to the gang and was by wearing it he is willing to sacrafice things for it.
The knife symbolizes regret, sadness, death, and great pain.
The blood symbolized loss. It also symbolizes acceptance. Andy knew he was going to die and he had accepted it in the end. His life flashed before his eyes and he realized all that he hadn't done and wouldn't be able to do
"I never turkeyed out of a rumble with the guardians." pg 6
"Pain ripped fire across his body when he moved." pg 8
The interraction with the police was important to the story becasue it showed how personal opinions and silly rivalrys can get in the way. The police didn't care much that someone had been murdered. To the police he brushed it off because hes a Royal. In this story the Royals is proably a gang that is not respected.
The theme of this story was to just live your life and to make the best decisions for your well being. In the story it talks about how Andy hadn't done so many things because of the choices he's made and the opportunities he didn't take only realizing this when he was about to die
Our reactions were...
When Andy had the oppurtunities to be saved, I felt like screaming at those characters who didn't help him. No matter what a person is representing, I would always help them out. No matter the race, color, or beliefs, you always have to help
I thought the story was very depressing. It was full of sad moments and times of regret. I was very touched by the story and how it talked about matters that happen in real life sadly almost every day.
Emma's Reaction
This was and seemed like a intresting story. Just by the title I was hooked. Throughout the story readers learn more about Andy. He had many chances to be saved. The drunk man and the old women had reasons why they didn't help. The couple though had no reason not to help. They were afraid that the rival gang of the Royals would go after them. To me thats awful, no matter what you should help people, there is no escuse no to. Over all this story was great and was very intrestin to read.
