Traditional Point of View of Curriculum

Traditional

The traditional point of view of the curriculum is simply stating what the instructors have prepared for the students in terms of a body of subjects or subject matter. It is only talking about the listing of subjects. It is more concerned with the intellectual training for the learners.

Why Reformation takes place?

Why Reformation takes place?

The argument about reform is quite familiar: that all students deserve access to the best ideas that the human race has achieved, that pursuit of such ideas enables the best development of the human mind, and that society will be most fully by people who are steeped in these traditions. That reform must be seen in the context of:

  • social forces
  • Learners
  • subject matter

View in Curriculum

  • The traditional curriculum is a more linear approach to learning.
  • The traditional curriculum also instills that school prepares you for life and learning is bound inside the school grounds only.

Characteristics of Traditional Curriculum

Characteristics

  • Content Driven
  • Teacher Centered
  • Tunnel Vision Strategy

ADVANTAGES OF TRADITIONAL CURRICULUM

Advantages

  • Traditional education seeks to be general in its curriculum and does not place heavy emphasis on one field over another.
  • A student of traditional education would not find himself lacking in some area of study
  • Students exercise proper behavior, and class schedules are put together along with a fixed recess and lunch break to maximize the student’s progression and time in school

Progressive/Emerging Point of View of Curriculum

Progressive

The Progressive point of view curriculum is giving the students and the teachers more interaction in learning. Also they are catering subjects that would help the students develop essential skills that they may need in the future.

Why Reformation takes place?

Why Reformation takes place?

  • Effectivity of programming (Burn,1995)
  • Progress is not sustained at isolated places (Devine, 1993)
  • Address and prepare students for real world diversity and international issues (Richter, n.d.)

View in Curriculum

  • Aside from listing subjects and content, curriculum must be actualized by learners
  • Reflective thinking is needed to unify the curricular elements
  • The more a student is exposed to a situation which he/she can relate to, the learning and development will be easier for both the teacher and student.

Characteristics of Progressive Curriculum

Characteristics

  • Culturally Responsive Teaching
  • Student Centered
  • More hands-on research, sudden detours of lessons and opportunity to learn in Field

ADVANTAGES OF PROGRESSIVE CURRICULUM

Advantages

  • Uses what fits for the learner
  • Teachers are using UDL based learning in a classroom.
  • Teachers also give less pressure to the students while teaching and giving them praises and recognition for their work.
