(507 b.c- 332 b.c

  • In 507 B.C a system of political reforms called "rule by the people" this would be the first known democracy.
  • It was comprised of 3 separate levels, the Ekklesia, the Boule, and the Dikasteria
  • This political system practiced direct democracy, citizens were able to vote directly on bills, laws, and legislation.
  • although this was considered a democracy not everyone could vote, in fact only 10%-20% of people in Ancient Greece at the time could.
  • Only male citizens over the age of 18 could be apart of "Demos", the democratic process.

  • In Ancient Greece, citizens were given the opportunity and right to make a rational decisions for the benefit of themselves and their society.
  • This was considered to be the first democracy in the world, which helped set in stone key principles that are the foundation of classical liberalism.
  • There was a democratic government, where the power was in the people and the decisions the government made.

  • In 1215, England's King John had to deal with a possible rebellion by powerful Barron’s
  • The king agreed that the Magna Carta, which was the country's charter of liberties, would apply to him and all future heirs to place them within the rule of law.
  • The document had many alterations made, but eventually became the foundation of rights and freedoms for free men in England.
  • it became a historic symbol throughout England of freedom from oppression by the people.

  • The reformation was a time of religious, cultural, and political disruption that changed the catholic church
  • Martin Luther and Henry VIII began to question the churches power
  • Eventually, individuals were influenced to start to think for themselves instead of having the church control their decisions.

  • This is considered to be the oldest recorded democracy in the world.

  • there was an increase of self-interest and competition along with technological advancements, cheap labor, and an increasing urban population.

Changes to the class system 1800

with the ideas of the enlightenment philosophers and principle of classical liberalism being supported and spread throughout the world, there was a distinct time of change to the class system. a system that was once separated by social status, class sewer separate due to the economic standing of an individual. With this, there was more freedom to move up or down the system, hard work paid off and instead of being born into a class, most people had to work to get where they wanted to be.

They have the opportunity to compete against others for the sake of their own social standing. Principles of classical liberalism promote economic freedom and individual importance. With the changing of class systems people had more freedom and equality.
