The Pendleton Act was created to make system that included most government jobs, the judiciary, and the military. The aim of the Civil Service Act Commission was to fill jobs to basic citizens. At first it only controlled a few jobs but over time it grew to include more jobs.

Since 1789, United States Senators were elected very unfairly and often bribed. Progressives wanted to stop the abuse of power and have American citizens vote for Senators directly. The 17th Amendment required the direct election of Senators.
In most states women could not vote in federal elections, so more women joined the federal amendment to be able to vote in all elections. Alice Paul took more forceful steps towards being able to vote. She met with the president and he gave his approval of the act. So in 1919 congress passed the 19th amendment to give women the right to vote.
Du Bois was the first African American to receive a PhD from Harvard University. He wanted to stop segregation so he joined Jane Addams in creating "National Association for the Advancement of Colored People." (NAACP). Black and white people worked for equal rights for African Americans.
In 1874, a group of women formed a group called the WCTU. Frances Willard became the president of the WCTU in 1879. She worked to ban alcohol because she had lost her husband to heavy drinking.
Ida was enraged at the murders so she urged African Americans to protest the lynchings. She called for a boycott of segregation. Wells spoke out depite threats to her life.
Roosevelt took action towards saving the nations wilderness. And to fuel the industry growth. Companies were cutting down entire forests at a time. Roosevelt was not against using resources but he thought they needed to be used wisely. He pressed for conservation and urged companies to plant new trees in the forests they were clearing.
The president supported to protect consumers. Upton Sinclair's novel shocked Roosevelt had shocked him. Roosevelt made a public report exposing the meat factories on what was in the meat. The public was so angry that it forced congress to pass a law to allow closer inspection on meat packaging. Muckraker also exposed companies for making false claims. In response Congress passed the food and drug act, which required food and drug makers to list all of the ingredients on their packages.
While Roosevelt was in office he won the reputation as "trustbuster", a person working to destroy monopolies and trusts. He liked big businesses but he saw the difference between good trust and bad trusts. Good trusts were efficient, but bad trust cheated the public and took advantage of the workers. So he said the government has to control them or destroy them.
Many progressives backed a graduate income tax. The wealthy pay taxes at a higher rate than the middle class. The sixteenth Amendment was issued to give Congress the power to pass an income tax. It was ratified in 1913.
