Human Impact on the Lithosphere: Overgrazing

Define Overgrazing

Overgrazing: excessive grazing which causes damage to grassland.

Areas In NC Where It Occurs

Overgrazing occurs anywhere in North Carolina where there are farms. It has destroyed the farm lands, but it benefits the livestock on the farms. It has affected the increase or decrease of seed and biomass production.

Example 1 :Pastures

What causes overgrazing?

The main cause of overgrazing is in insufficient pasture, and farmers have to place their livestock in pastures. Therefore, one way to control overgrazing is to increase pasture production.

Example 2 :Farmlands

How does overgrazing impact the lithosphere?

Additionally, plowing and irrigation frequently lead to increased erosion. Overgrazing animals can strip the vegetation from an area which can also cause increased erosion.

Example 3 :Grasslands in Mongolia

What Are The Effects Of Overgrazing On The Environment?

Overgrazing can reduce ground cover, enable erosion and compaction of the land by wind and rain. This reduces the ability for plants to grow and water to penetrate, which harms soil microbes and results in serious erosion of the land.

What are some ways to reduce human impact of overgrazing and maximize sustainable land use?

  • Pastures can be supplemented with stored livestock feed
  • Livestock can be pulled off of the pasture
  • A percentage of pasture acres can be planted for warm or cool season species while perennial species recover
