Introduction

Lev Vygotsky

• Born 11/5/1896 in Orsha, Belarus (Part of the Soviet Union)
• He attended Moscow University studying both Medicine and Law
• At University met with Alexander Luria who helped him gain access to the psychological institute at Gomal University

Works/ Theories

-Sociocultural Theory

-Zone of Proximal Developement

-Thinking and Speach

-The cultural-historical approach: studied how cultural and social interaction patterns remodel developmental processes and forms of mediation

-The developmental approach: studied the way children acquire higher cognitive functions

-The instrumental approach: investigates the way humans make use of objects as mediation support in reasoning and memory

Soviet Influence

Due to his Theories and the Soviet Communist Government Vygotsky's theories were not widely circulated until after his death as his theories did not coencided with that of the rest of the communist party

Vygotsky worked in university and was funded as a Psychologist to study the mind as a means to improve the Soviets as a whole. He worked to develope high psychological funcitons

His Theories did not always support Marxist Psychology.

Conclusion

I think the most impactful work Vygotsky has done would be his work on Social Cultural Theory Detailing cultures role in developement of children. Social Cultural thoery emphasises not only the potential ability of the individual but also the potentail ability with proper guidance and education. This work is some that is used contemporary in education today.
