The Korean War Timeline

1945

->The occupation of Korea.

The Soviet Union controlled the north and the United States controlled the south of Korea. And because of this, they both adapted their occupators government/beliefs. So North KOrea became communist, while Soth Korea became anti-communists.

Once the Soviet Union and USA both left korea, Korea split up into North Korea, and South Korea. They split right on the 38th parallel. After this happened North Korea immediately started to build up its army; the south did not though.

June 25, 1950

North Korea invades South Korea. On June 25, 1950, the north Korean troops armed themselves with powerful tanks and other soviet weapons, and then attacked South Korea. Within days, they over took the south Korean capital city of Seoul.

Here is where the US sent some troops to help with the situation. The reason that the US got involved because they didn't want this collision to start another world war. The US and South Korean troops were able to hault their retreat near Pusan.

The UN forces sent in troops to help figh. Sept 15, 1950. General Douglas MacArthur was in charge of the UN troop. With his plan he was able to push back North Koreans. His plan was to strike at their weakness of limited supply lines by launching a surprise attack on the port in the city Ichon.

About 300,000 chinese soldiers attacked the sourth koreans and US troops. Largely outnumbered the UN troops ended up being pushed back. With China now in the war the United States were faced with a serios land war in asia. It was started to believe that this war could not be won without large number of troops and even atomic weapons. But Truman did not belive that we needed neither of those things.

by november of 1950 MacArthur started an offensive attack toward Yalu River. Even with Chinease government officials warning the americans not to advance near Chinas borders, MacArthur still went up to the Yalu river.

MacArthur had the troop go all the way to Yalu river.

A cease-fire is signed, with the agreed border being the 38th parallel. No peace treaty was issued though.

1951

The UN troops were finally able to pull themselves together and stabilized troops near the 38th parallel. While there the opposing sides fought small, fatal fights that never solved anything.

There has yet to be a peace treaty between North and South Korea. So they are still constantly at war/conflict.
