I took time off of school to fully develop my sense of self, which helped me greatly. Now, I want to do more self reflection or take a career quiz to deepen my knowlege about myself and figure out if the path that I am on is perfect for me. Self relection includes understanding my values, skills, interests and personality (OpenStax, n.d).
A SMART goal I have for this step is to determine which grade range I would want to teach after graduation because that determines what education major I would need to pursue. I want to do it by the end of this semester because this is the last semester where I am only taking general education courses.
The most important goal I have for this step is to make an appointment with my advisor or the department head for Education to make sure that I am taking the correct steps and using the resources that are avaliable to me. I want to do this by the end of the semester so that I am confident in my journey before I get deeper into my education.
A strategy that I want to use for this step is to try and find a job or internship over the summer in either a school setting or somewhere with kids. By doing this I can try and help kids in the age range I want to teach to try out if it is the correct fit for me.
By my junior year I should meet with Career and Life Planning to determine what my next steps after graduation are and work on my resume. Being an Education Major, I do need to get my masters degree, and currently plan to continue my education, but that may change after meeting with them.
During my education courses, networking is extremly important to achieve for when I do start my career.
The biggest goal that I have for this step is to be completly open to oppurtunities and change, as well as following my heart during my entire career. In order to be successful, it is important to be able to go with the flow with whatever life throws at you.

The biggest key takeaway that I got from the occupational profile is that I actually have more knowledge about what it takes to become a teacher than I thought I did prior to looking at the proile for Elementary Education.
Many of my interests include helping others learn in ways that are the most beneficial for them, especially kids. I also want to be able to be a safe space for kids who may need extra support, whether emotionally or academically.
The profile says that many people start off teaching with
just a bachelors degree. In massachusetts though, it is required
that teachers have their masters degree. Many people may start
off teaching with just their bachelors degrees because after you
receive your B.A, you have five years to go back to get your
masters degree, if you choose to go into the classroom. Prior to starting this didnt go with my academic goals because I
wanted to jump straight into my career after four years. Once I
realized that I had to get my masters, I debated waiting a
few years or going straight after my bachelors. Now, this
aligns with my acedmic goals because I fully know
what to expect with schooling.
The median pay for elementary school teachers is a little over sixty thousand a year in Massachusetts (CareerOneStop,2023), which is the state that I am getting my license to teach in. I don’t have many large financial goals, so I believe that this pay does align with my financial goals.
How much
money do people earn
in this career? Does this
align to your financial goals?
The one thing that is needed right after graduation is to get your license. Luckily, taking the MTEL’s, which is the license test for Massachusetts, occurs during the four years I am at Baypath. For Elementary Education, there are four separate tests that need to be completed in order to earn my license. I already completed two and am currently studying for my third test this summer.
I am choosing to go straight to a masters program after I graduate, but many people do choose to wait the five years. According to the occupation profile, people who are starting this career have no work
experience or on job training
(CareerOneStop,2023).
