Katherine Johnson

At the center of this is Katherine Johnson, a computer at NASA. Katherine is in charge of computing numbers and equations that had never been used before. On a rainy day she returned from the bathroom, and was greeted by her supervisor, who is angry because of her absence. What follows is powerful speech about segregation.

Katherine's use of ethos

Katherine enters a rather uncomfortable situation when she walks into the workroom after a trip to the bathroom. She is greeted by her supervisor (who is not particularly friendly or understanding in his confrontation) and who barades her about where she has been. She answers all of his questions calmly and respectfully, until he claims she may not be telling the truth.

As she continues on, she quotes the words of other staff members and her job requirements to further push her point. With each word her voice gets softer and then that stops abruptly and becomes more and more tense and loaded.

Effect on the audience

Effect on the audience

This was effective on her audience, because it caused some level of personal guilt in each, and makes them think about how their actions truly affect the lives of others.

Katherines use of pathos

Katherines use of pathos

As Katherine continues further, her voice breaks. In desperation and in anguish she finally lets go and brings to light the fact that each person the room around her has in some way, been unkind or treated her differently because of the color of her skin, and hat they have never seen her as equal. As quickly as this starts it stops and with that she finishes her statement picks up her things and leaves the room.

Affect on the audience

This leaves the entire room in uncomfortable silence. The workers have to think about their actions, and it strikes a chord in each person that they may have done the wrong thing.
