Critique of Grit – The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Angela Lee Duckworth https://www.ted.com/talks/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance Angela Lee Duckworth gives a presentation on Tedtalk called Grit – The Power of Passion and Perseverance. This presentation is about how the quality of grit can lead to success for everyone from students to professionals. The presenter includes a definition and explanation of grit and describes the her findings after doing a study about grit using high school students in Chicago, as part of her graduate studies to become a psychologist. The presenter’s presentation skills are excellent. She speaks clearly with good intonation and pauses. Also, her body language is strong as she uses hand gestures, changing body direction, her smile and good eye contact to cause the audience to listen attentively. In addition, the organization of the content is very good. She starts with a personal anecdote to capture the audience’s attention and reveal her background. She explains what led to her interest in the topic, describes her study and findings and wraps up with a final conclusion. There are some complex ideas in this presentation and I think the conclusion could have been stronger if it reviewed some of the points about grit in the presentation and then talked about the future. As it was, only the final line brought us back to the topic of grit. The presenter was very polished and compelling and the content of this talk was very interesting.
