Decolonization of India

The INC, Indian National Congress, became the main political party for India. This group became the leaders of the revolution for India, and has much power over the states in India.

In 1858, the British gained control of India. The British wanted to take over the valuable resources that were native to India for themselves.

In 1917, after World War I, the INC had issues gaining the trust of the peasant population in India. The British soon vowed to start letting the Indian people become a Nationalist country. shortly after the British started a war with the Islamic Ottoman Empire, and was ended by an out break of influenza.

April 13, 1919, British soldiers marched to Jallianwala Bagh. There, many natives were men, women, and children were at the Sikh holy city to celebrate the new year. According to the British, this violated the rules about public assembly. Though this was a rather short event, there was over 350 deaths an casualties.

Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) started to become a well known political leader for India in 1920. The reason for this was because the British's actions were cruel and harsh towards the Indian people. This lead him to form an anti-British campaign.

In 1922, Gandhi was arrested for his protest and outcry for justice over the Amritsar Mascara. This movement also helped to increase the about amount of nationalism in India.

The Salt March took place from March to April 1930 in India. This march was lead by Gandhi to protest the British rule. The entire march was a religious retreat that stretched from the Ahmadabad to the Arabian Sea.

In 1947, India finally gained it's independence from British rule, and divided into Hindu and Muslim India. This resulted in much blood shed.

In 1951, the first general elections happened in India. the country let the citizens register to vote, and Jawaharlal Nehur was the first prime minister of India.
