When using figurative language in a text such as similies, metaphors, and personification, it helps make the characters and the storyline come alive in the reader's mind.

The dogs eyes are blue
Metaphors do not use like or as.
Personification is when you give human characteristics to a nonhuman object
Figurative language can affect mood and tone in a text by showing the emotion with the characters in the story by saying things like "The bullets screamed in the air when the gun was fired". That makes the mood gloomy and sad but when you say things like "The wind howled when we went to the mountains". That might make you feel happy and cold on the inside.

Why is figurative language important?
Figurative language is important because if we didn't have figurative authors wouldn't be able to make the characters in story come alive in the readers mind. Authors use figurative language in stories so it's more interesting and not boring.
