George Lucas

George Lucas

The struggle and success of his storytelling career.

As a young high school student, Lucas yearned to be a successful race car driver, however he had to map out a new life path after a serious car crash changed his life's trajectory.

Here's a brief road map of his life.

EDUCATION

When Lucas first left home, he declared that he would be a millionaire by the age of 30.

Lucas planned to attend art school, but first attended Modesto Junior College, where he studied anthropology, sociology, and literature.

This is where he began filming with an 8mm camera.

Sometimes he filmed car races.

Lucas then transferred to the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts. USC was one of the earliest universities to have a school devoted to motion picture film.

Early Career

American Graffiti (1973), inspired by his youth in early 1960s Modesto, California, and produced through the newly founded Lucasfilm.

The film was critically and commercially successful, and received five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.

EPIC SPACE OPERA STAR WARS

His next film, the epic space opera Star Wars (1977), had a troubled production but was a surprise hit, becoming the highest-grossing film at the time, winning six Academy Awards and sparking a cultural phenomenon.

Lucas produced and co-wrote the sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).

With director Steven Spielberg, he created, produced and co-wrote the Indiana Jones films Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989) and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).

He also wrote my personal favorite as a kid, Willow.

He also produced and wrote a variety of films and television series through Lucasfilm between the 1970s and the 2010s.
