Often when we don’t understand what a text is saying it is because we don’t understand the vocabulary and sentence structure of the text. We will look closer at the vocabulary and sentences in this letter so that we begin to understand what it means.

The first sentence of this letter begins with, ‘I write this to tell you how in thirty-three days I sailed to the Indies with the fleet that the illustrious King and Queen, our Sovereigns gave me.’ In this section, the two words that you might not know the meaning of are illustrious and Sovereigns.
