Border Apprehensions

My opinion

I think that ICE does many important jobs, and that we should not get rid of it. However, it does need some revisions, as there is always a better way for things to be done. People from both sides on these debates rarely want to hear the other side of the story, but if compromises could be made, we would be a stronger country.

Lind, Dara. “‘Abolish ICE," Explained.” Vox.com, Vox Media, 28 June 2018, www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/3/19/17116980/ice-abolish-immigration-arrest-deport.

In this article written by Dara Lind, she talks about

  • The fight against ICE is not new
  • What ICE has done under Trump is nothing like people have seen before
  • The threat of deportation is greater than ever

Yes, disband it

She cites many credible people in her article outlining both sides of the argument, but two of the main people she quotes are Kamala Harris and Greisa Martinez. Both of these women talk about problems that are occuring within the ICE program. They think that the program is unchecked, has problems cinducting itself, and that we do not need to give them more money

because they are abusing

the program enough as it is.

Who are they?

Dara Lind, the author of the article, is one of the country;s leading immigration reporters, and has been covering immigration for over a decade.

Kamala Harris is a democratic senator from California who has been known to fight for the rights of everyone.

Greisa Martinez is the Advocacy Director for "United We Dream" that helps people find a voice of their own and help improve their lives.

How does this support my answer?

This article and the experts that are a part of it help to prove my point because stuff that ICE is doing is debatable. They are doing things that are needed, but the extent that they are doing these things has many people scared for their futures, which they haven't had to be so afraid of until Trump became president.

Zurcher, Anthony. “Abolish Ice: A New Demand from the Left Is Risky for Democrats.” BBC News, BBC, 2 July 2018, www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44687935.

In this article written by Anthony Zurcher, he talks about:

  • Trump's spin on ICE and deportation
  • What the Democrats think
  • Why we can't abloish ICE

No, don't disband it

He uses many credible numbers and people as sources, but the two I got the most out of were from President Trump and Sarah Saldana. Both of these people talk about the impacts that ICE has on the country the safety of the piublic, and how the

agency runs as a whole.

These two people, along with

Anthony give the readers

reasons as to why ICE is in

place, and why people should

start to appreciate what they

do.

Who are they?

Anthony Zurcher is the North American expert for BBC news who focuses on politics in the US. He was born in California, and raised in Texas.

Trump is our president who we all know has very strong opinions on immigration and stopping people from Mexico from coming into our country illegally.

Sarah Saldana served as ICE's director for 3 years, so she knows the agency and what they do better than most people.

How does this support my answer?

This supports my answer because there are reasons that ICE is in place. We can't allow people to come into this country without proper documentation. We need to have systems in place, but the way things are run need to be changed.

The duties that ICE are responsible for are much needed, as we need to keep illegals from out of this country that may pose a threat to the well being of the people who are here legally. However, the way things are run need to be changed. Under the new power in the government we are arresting anybody who is illegal, rather than putting the focus on people who have done things wrong. People who have been in this country for many years, who have children here and who are making a living, and providing to our economy are no threat to our well being and need not to be arrested. We are wasting space, time, and resources that could be used on these more dangerous people rather than those trying to make a better life for their family. Changes need to be made, but the overall goal needs to be kept in mind too. ICE is in place for a reason; to keep the people who are living here legally safe. Government officails need to find a way to do this while being less harsh about it.
