Use said in a Reported speech if we don't say who the person was talking to.

Reported Speech

The guide said that ants lived in giant nests.

I said that I couldn't read the map.

Use told in Reported speech when we say who the person was talking to. Also we use a name or object pronoun.

Direct Speech
