The Geneva Accords

Who Created the Geneva Accords and Why?

Who/Why

The Geneva Accords took place in April of 1954. Delegations had arrived in Geneva just a few weeks before the battle at Dien Bien Phu had ended. The convention started shorty after, the French suffered a major defeat at the hands of the Vietminh, but the French still dominated the Convention in comparison. Representatives from multiple countries such as the Soviet Union, People’s Republic of China, , Great Britain, and the United States were the main countries at the Geneva conference. Delegations from Laos and of course two from Vietnam were also present.

What did the accords say?

What

The Geneva accords stated that Vietnam was supposed to become an independent nation, as it had previously been ruled by the French. It also stated that elections were to be held, but until they were, the country was to be split in two. North Vietnam, and South Vietnam. The North was backed by communist nations such as USSR, and China, and the South was backed by the United States, France, and their allies.

When/Extra Details

After the Geneva accords were signed it marked an end to over 75 years of French colonialism. However the Final Decleration of the accords was actually left unsigned by all parties.

The Aftermath

The United States

The United States was dissatisfied with the outcome of the convention as North Vietnam had fallen into communist hands. As a result they didn't sign them. And later would enter the war making many of the same mistakes as France.

Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh was willing to accept the settlement as he did not want significant intervention from the United States and the accords would keep them form doing so. It would give the Vietminh a chance to prepare to win the upcoming elections.
