CARE

Evaluating Website Usability

Janin Quezada

INTRODUCTION

INTRO

CARE is a nonprofit organization. Their mission is to fight poverty and world hunger in third world countries. The organization’s focus is to empower women and girls specifically, as they believe that by providing women with education and job opportunities, their communities will stand stronger and prosper by leveling the field of opportunities to both men and women.

Working With Individuals

Working With Individuals

CARE’s work is not easy to do, as they are closely working with individuals that are in need of basic necessities often rendering them hopeless. The nonprofit organization’s public platform does a decent job in publicising their work as they are a well-known organization, supported by Michelle Obama and other renowned individuals.

Website Design Problems

Website Design Problems

The layout of the website does not convey the friendliness they strive to invoke in their work with those in need, making it difficult for the user to become affiliated with the nonprofit organization. As a result, the organization is losing support that could benefit more women on a grander scale.

Usability Service Experts Inc

Usability Service Experts Inc

  • Usability Service Experts Inc. takes pride in providing suggestions to clients based on third-party testing, doing research with scholarly based articles, and by overall thinking about the problems and solutions from a different perspective.
  • The prescriptions provided by Usability Service Experts Inc. are the best solution to what is needed to be solved.
  • To provide CARE with a well-rounded perspective of the effectivity of their platform, Usability Service Experts Inc.
  • First conducted a short survey before starting the usability testing on their website. Survey purpose was to gain the participants’ insight of nonprofit organizations. The usability test would then help examine CARE’s website weaknesses to provide the best solutions to increase affiliations with the organization through the collection of qualitative and quantitative data.

METHODOLOGY

METHODOLOGY

  • Usability Service Experts Inc. examined CARE’s nonprofit organization website to determine its usability, specifically how effective the website is in recruiting more donations.
  • Usability testing was achieved through third-party testing.
  • Third-party testing is an inexpensive and economic method that has been applied to many studies for about nineteen years (Nielsen 2012). The candidates, six in total, ranged from the age of 25-45 to gather a wide range in perspective about their likelihood of donating to nonprofit organizations and once presented to an organization’s public platform, and asked what would convince them to support a nonprofit organization.

Usability Testing Protocol

The Usability Testing Protocol

1. Pick six users that have never heard of CARE.org

2. Ask what they think the site is about after they search for it online and are on the site’s web page.

3. Ask what their first impression is of the website?

4. Reveal what the website is about if they have not figured it out. (It is a big indication if the user does not figure out in the first minutes of the home page).

5. Now that they know what the site is about, ask them to find out where they could read more information about the organization. Record the time it takes them to find the “About” page.

The Usability Testing Protocol

6. After they have found the “About Us” section. Have them read it and ask them what they think about all of the clickable options each page has.

7. Give the task to the user to find out how the organization began and how they help third world countries now.

8. Ask the user to rate how they feel about the text. Is it easy to read ? How do they feel being on the site ?

9. Ask the user to rate how likely they are to donate to the organization.

RESULTS

The qualitative and quantitative results gathered to prescribe CARE with the optimal suggestions for their website to gather support and donations from more individuals. Gaining the perspective of both relatively young and more mature adult’s benefits CARE as it is a nonprofit that needs support from everyone as its main goal is to support as many communities as possible.

RESULTS

Quantitative Data

Quantitative Data

The column graph represents the time it took the six users to perform task 5 and task 7 in the usability testing portion of the study. The time was recorded and graphed in seconds.

Qualitative Data

Qualitative Data

The qualitative data demonstrates the reactions the users had while on CARE.org. It also details what the users experienced as they completed the tasks asked of them. Finally, we have their opinion: whether they would be affiliated with the organization or not, based on the information available on the website.

Final

Results

Final Results

  • The users’ decision to not want to become affiliated with the organization seems to be mostly because the information presented in the website is unorganized.
  • Participants explained that what they dislike is how nonprofit organizations behave more like a business through their tactics of fundraising.
  • For this reason, CARE should revise their information and fundraising options so that users will trust the organization through the easy access of information and the variety of ways one can be involved.

Recommendations

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Usability Testing Experts Inc. suggests that the nonprofit organization CARE redesign their website to present information to visitors in a quick and effective manner.
  • To begin with, CARE should delete some options and clickable links that seem redundant for the most part. For example: under About>CARE Package: the user can read about the genesis of the organization, then a brief summary leads the reader to pick whether they would like to read “Our History” or “The Original Care Package.”
  • Secondly, it is very important to provide visitors of the site clear details about the organization’s history. Currently, it is difficult to find how CARE operates.
  • Finally, as a fresh start, the color scheme should be changed so that users can be introduced to a new platform entirely. The colors should represent the values of their work, instead of using the present colors of orange, pink, blue, and purple.
  • To enhance the visual aspect of the site, more videos should be added throughout so that the user does not have to read too much information and can get a true feel of the work CARE does in the communities the organization is involved in.
