From legendary hockey games to Cabbage Patch Kids, the 80s was
certainly a time to be alive! Kicking off the decade with the Winter Olympics, the American hockey team surprised everyone with a defeat against the Soviet Union. This game became known has the "Miracle on Ice." This name was thanks to sport commentator, who in the final seconds on the game delivered his famous quote, "Do you believe in miracles? YES!"
Of course, the 80s wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. With the height of
the aids epidemic and tragedies like the Chernobyl disaster, people had plenty to worry about. A mysterious disease was ravaging the world, seemingly attacking gay people. The disease was referred to as the "gay cancer," and many were at a loss of what to do. However, the disease was far from attacking soley gay people, anyone could catch the disease and one knew how to stop it or how it spread. This disease is now known as AIDS, and it is an disease that destroys the immine system. For a long time, the government did little to help the suffering people. After public outcry and demand for proper research, scientists have found a way to treat and prevent it.
There was also great advancements in the music industry and
technology. The beggining of MTV completely changed the way music was percieved. Companies realized the amazing money making potential in music videos and appearances on the network. The late 80s also saw the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee. This was the beginning of the internet .
