Westward Expansion

Louisiana Purchase - 1803

Topic 1

The Louisiana purchase practically doubled the United States, with new land, new people would come and further expansion would proceed.

It expands the United State’s territory towards the west, inspiring people to continue further.

Steam Locomotive - 1803

Topic 2

The steam locomotive, better known as the train, was invented and was being used for traveling.

The steam locomotive is a better use of transportation for not only people, but supplies too. Given this easier form of transportation, expanding to the west can become much easier.

Lewis and Clark Expedition - 1804

Topic 3

The expedition of Lewis and Clark led to many discoveries within the western half of North America, soon to be the United States. The discovery of the greater west and relationships with natives helped us know what to expect when moving on west.

Telegraph Invented - 1844

Topic 4

The telegraph was one of the first forms of long distance communication, used with morse code. This would help with communication from state to state, sending messages quicker so that people can have confidence and a sense of communication when going farther west.

Gold Rush - 1848-1853

Topic 5

The Gold Rush was a time when gold was everywhere. People from all over the world go to western America to find gold hidden in the land and rivers.

This information set millions of young money hungry people to set foot in the west and to explore and maybe even live there.
